The Origin
It’s 7pm. Shawn has spent the day making a thousand decisions that didn’t feel like decisions. The kids are finally in bed. The last task: label seventeen plastic bins to tame the LEGO crisis. He picks up the label maker, types “LEGO – Red Bricks,” presses print. A click, a whir, and then: TAPE EMPTY.
A well-rested Shawn would have walked to the junk drawer and replaced the cartridge. This was not well-rested Shawn. This was amygdala-Shawn, and amygdala-Shawn interpreted the message as a declaration of war. He was on the verge of throwing it at the wall when his wife walked in, took one look at a grown man in a death stare with a handheld office appliance, and said: “Well, have a fishy.”
That was the moment. Not a lab experiment. Not a research paper. A label maker and a goldfish cracker. Shawn had spent his career studying what happens when the brain’s decision-making system is overwhelmed. Now he’d lived it in the most absurd way possible. The neuroscience was clear: sustained decision-making causes glutamate to accumulate in the prefrontal cortex. The brain already has a clearance system for it. The question was whether you could support that system nutritionally. He spent two years finding the answer.
Then he ran a clinical trial to prove it.
